The Happy Hooker: Portrait of a Sexual Revolutionary

$26.99

Before Heidi Fleiss, the Mayflower Madame, and numerous courtesans and madams that have dominated the media of late, there was Xaviera Hollander, "The Happy Hooker." Arguably the most famous name of the modern madams who have titillated Americans over the years, Xaviera Hollander was assured her place in history with her autobiographical mega-selling book "The Happy Hooker: My Own Story" (in its 28th printing with over 20 million copies sold).

Now there is a documentary about Hollander's life, "The Happy Hooker: Portrait Of A Sexual Revolutionary." The film explores Hollander's personal evolution from her first years in a Japanese concentration camp in Indonesia, to her subsequent relocation to Holland with her family, before ending up in the United States as a top-level secretary with fluency in four languages.

Coming to New York for a job with the Dutch Consulate, Hollander (then known as Vera DeVries) indulged her insatiable sexual appetite freely until a hooker advised her to make money from that "goldmine you’re sitting on." Hollander had a great impact on the feminist movement of the 1970s. She however was punished for her sexual frankness, her provocative views, and her honesty about her commercial enterprises, with deportation from the United States and Canada. Hollander currently resides in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and Marbella, Spain, with her new (and younger) husband.

"The Happy Hooker: Portrait of a Sexual Revolutionary" includes extensive archival footage, current musings by Hollander, her friends and lovers, and commentary from America’s foremost sexologists. (68 minutes, 2008)
