The trials and election of an engineering marvel that let boats sail over a mountain and move the raw materials that helped build New York State. The canal was a 19th century super highway that opened up business and trade for a remote area. Stores, hotels and towns sprang up around the comings and goings of the canal barges. Lock tenders worked the gates, horses trudged along the tow paths and no matter the bustle, one could still hear the quiet way 60 tons of boat would glide through water at four miles an hour.
