The Tokyo Comedy Store is a serious, yet humorous look into the cultural differences between Japanese and Western styles of comedy. It follows Brian Anderson, an American solider stationed overseas, as he struggles to make his way as a stand up comedian in Tokyo, Japan.
Performing with the Tokyo Comedy Store as a member of its English speaking stand up comedians (called the Tokyo Cynics) Brian eventually learns the drastic differences between Japanese and Western styles of humor. He investigates various forms of traditional Japanese comedy such as Manzi & Rakugo, and also interviews fellow stand up comedians about what they have learned from their experiences in Japan. Throughout the film, Brian progresses as a comic with help from the members of the Tokyo Comedy Store. (84 minutes, 2008)
